Obstacles to Women's Role in Peacebuilding in Sudan

Abstract




Peace, as a crucial element for global well-being, requires collective effort and cooperation. Women, who constitute half of the world's population, play a vital role in the peacebuilding process. This study focuses on the role of women in peacebuilding in South Sudan and examines the obstacles they face, especially considering that, after years of conflict, South Sudan confronts significant challenges in achieving sustainable peace. Despite this, the barriers to women's participation in peace processes are often overlooked. The key questions this article aims to explore are: what role do women play in the peacebuilding process, and what obstacles do they encounter? The hypothesis tested, based on a descriptive-explanatory methodology and grounded in the theories of liberal and pacifist feminism, posits that prevailing cultural norms in South Sudan are major barriers to the effective involvement of women in peacebuilding activities. In fact, although women in South Sudan actively contribute to peace efforts despite numerous challenges, these cultural norms significantly hinder their full participation in peacebuilding initiatives
